ABOUT JONES KENDALL
Jones Kendall make handmade acoustic guitars and stringed folk
instruments in the North of England. Colin Kendall and Steve Jones
met whilst studying musical instrument technology, a course in
guitar and violin making, at Leeds college of music in 1991.
Colin started the course after working for many years as an art
and craft teacher. A music and art enthusiast, Colin had been
interested in the making folk instruments for a number of years.
After much encouragement from musician friends, Colin started
a business making folk instruments in the mid 90s.
The grandson of an organ builder, Steve is a career musician
and carpenter. After serving an apprenticeship he turned his attention
to making guitars. “I fell in love with the sound and style
of pre-war American guitars and wanted to recreate instruments
from that era."
Steve and Colin started out as sole builders but kept in touch
after leaving music school and began to work together on a range
of resophonic guitars. The combination of Colin’s feel and
understanding of materials and Steve’s eye for detail worked
well together and the first instruments produced by the partnership
had great resonance and voice.
When these early ventures proved successful the next step was
clear. Setting up a workshop in Bury, Steve and Colin began working
together on designing and producing range of instruments that
reflect their passion for music and fine craftsmanship.
Each guitar is lovingly crafted incorporating the best of lutherie
tradition and using the finest materials to ensure the balance
response and tone of the finished instrument. Jones Kendall guitars
are played by professional musicians and enthusiasts who value
the quality and sound of handmade instruments.
"The most fun you can have with your trousers on."
